Association for the Advancement of Family Planning (AAFP)
The Association for the Advancement of Family Planning (AAFP) is a national coalition of family planning (FP) advocates in Nigeria, comprising FP champions and of over 50 organizations including networks, development partner projects, non-governmental organization, Civil Society Organizations (CSO), government of Nigeria Ministries, Departments and Agencies, and the private sector committed to increasing access to quality family planning information and services in Nigeria plans to contribute to advance the government’s commitment.
Its focus is majorly in high level advocacy targeting decision makers at the executive, legislative and key high profile individuals, heads of government ministries, departments and agencies (MDA) to garner support for FP program in Nigeria. The organizations goal is to increase access for FP in Nigeria
Role in the PACFaH project
AAFP is the family planning issue lead in the PACFaH project in Nigeria, the organization implements the Family Planning component of the project at National Level.
AAFP in the PACFaH project advocates:
That the Federal government provides 50% of required funds for FP commodity procurement as recommended in the Nigeria Family Planning Blueprints (2014-2018) document by 2017.
For the timely release of funds dedicated to FP commodities and consumables and hold government accountable for the release of committed funds dedicated to FP commodities and consumables.
The review of FP service delivery guideline to enable patent and proprietary medicine vendors (PPMVs) to motivate and counsel FP clients, supply of barrier methods of contraceptives, and resupplying of oral pills.
AAFP works with other CSO’s and Champions to advocate for its FP `asks’ and to track and monitor FP funding at national level and its 3 focal states, The organization has gathered evidence for its advocacy efforts including the identification of barriers and bottlenecks in a Scan of FP administrative implementation systems to identify 3 regulatory barriers in FMoH which will be targeted for review during the project, the organization has also produced and disseminated Media briefs on funding for FP, Identified CSOs with ability to conduct advocacy for FP at national level and empowered them towards effective advocacy efforts and budget tracking.
